WILTON – The Healthy Community Coalition will honor National Osteoporosis Month by providing free bone density screenings in the coalition’s mobile health unit during May.

Mobile Health Unit Coordinator and nurse Sandy Richard uses the Achilles Express ultrasonometer, which involves placing the heel in an ultrasound machine.

Nutrition, physical activity and tobacco use will be discussed at the time of the screening. The results will be given to those being screened for discussion with their medical provider.

The mobile unit will be at the following towns. No appointment is necessary. Each screening takes approximately 10 minutes.

Livermore Falls: May 5, at Spruce Mountain Health Services from 7:30 to noon.

Rangeley: May 14, Rehabilitation Center from 9 to 11 a.m.

Stratton: May 14 at the Town Office from noon to 2 p.m.

Strong: May 15 at Strong Health Center, 9 to 11 a.m.

Phillips: May 15 at Shadagee Apartment, noon to 2 p.m.

Kingfield: May 16 at Mount Abram Health Center, 8:30 to 11 a.m.

New Vineyard: May 16 at My Wife’s Place from noon to 2 p.m.

Wilton: May 19, Firehouse Video, 9 to 11 a.m.

Farmington: May 19, Hannaford Brothers, noon to 2 p.m.

Weld: May 22, Weld General Store, 9 to 11 a.m.

Carthage: May 22, Town Office, noon to 2 p.m.

Osteoporosis is the loss of bone mass and thinning of bones that causes a decrease in bone strength.

The osteoporosis screening on Monday, May 5, in Livermore Falls will be part of a Women’s Wellness Day hosted by the Spruce Mountain Health Services. The event, sponsored by the Maine Breast and Cervical Health Program and the Avon Foundation Breast Care Fund, will include free mammograms, pap tests and breast exams for Maine women age 40 and older who meet the guidelines. Women can call 1-800-350-5180 for more information and to register for the event. Space is limited.

At the Mount Abram Health Center in Kingfield on May 16, Dr. Hope Hall-Wilson will be at the bone density screenings to discuss any issues about bone health.

Breast Health Program Coordinator Jennifer McCormack, R.N., will be available May 16 at the New Vineyard screening to answer breast health questions and to offer assistance in scheduling mammogram appointments. Women who do not have insurance or who have a high deductible on their insurance may qualify for a free mammogram.
