BIDDEFORD (AP) – Authorities have called off the search for a 21-year-old Connecticut man who was last seen wandering off from a party during the weekend.

Game wardens and police said the disappearance of Ryan Matt, a former student at the University of New England, was now being treated as a missing person case. Investigators said there was no indication of foul play.

Scores of volunteers joined in Monday’s daylong search. Teams searched by foot, helicopter and boat along the beaches and in marshes, woods and backyards.

Searchers included college friends of Matt, some of whom joined hands and prayed.

“This isn’t how I wanted to spend my day, searching for a good friend,” said Geoff Cantin, who saw Matt on Saturday but didn’t attend the party. Cantin said Matt is a good person who, like many college kids, apparently left good judgment behind while partying.

Police said Matt, of Plainville, Conn., was drunk late Saturday night when he was seen leaving a home in the city’s seaside Biddeford Pool neighborhood.

Matt was described as white, 5-foot-9 and 140 pounds with brown hair and blue eyes. Authorities said he was last seen wearing a white T-shirt with a plaid shirt over it and blue jeans.
