The two-day event will feature healthful activities for the entire family.

LEWISTON – The Auburn-Lewiston YMCA and L/A Trails will present the inaugural L/A Wellness Weekend on June 7 and 8, sponsored by CMMC. The weekend will feature a variety of health-oriented events for the whole family.

Participants will range from beginners to weekend warriors to elite athletes from all over New England. Organizers anticipate 1,000 participants and more than 5,000 spectators over the two-day event. All events will be held rain or shine.

Local organizations will display wellness information and provide various health screenings. Local venders will offer food and refreshments.

Musiconnection will provide live entertainment during Sunday’s St. Mary’s Regional Medical Center 3K Fun Walk and Central Maine Orthopaedics 5K Run.

Proceeds from the L/A Wellness Weekend will be donated to the Auburn-Lewiston YMCA for youth and teen programming and L/A Trails.

Scheduled events for the weekend are as follows:

Bike events: The Sun Journal Bicycle Race at 9:30 a.m. Saturday, June 7, is an 11-mile hilly loop around Lake Auburn (1,134 feet of climbing per lap). The categories are as follows: Men Cat 4, Junior 18 and under, Men Cat 5, Master 55/56, Women Cat 4, Men Pro 1/2/3, Men Cat 3, Master 35+, Master 45+ and Women Pro 1/2/3. Fees are $20 if postmarked by June 1; $10 for juniors; and a $5 late charge for registrations received after June 1

The Country Kitchen Great Falls Criterium Bicycle Race at 8 a.m. Sunday, June 8, is a fast one-mile loop in downtown Auburn. The course is three-quarters of a mile with four corners and one short steep uphill after the start/finish line. The field is limited to 20 minimum and 100 maximum participants.

Race categories are as follows: Men Cat 5, Junior 18 and under, Master 55/56, Master 45+, Women Cat 4, Master 35+, Kid’s Race, Men Cat 3, Women Pro 1/2/3, Men Pro 1/2/3, and Men Cat 4. Fees are $20 if registered by June 2; $10 for juniors; $10 for second race fee; and a $5 late charge after June 2.

The Emerson Toyota Freestyle Bicycle Stunt Show will be held at 11 a.m and 1 p.m. Sunday, June 8. The Northeast Trick Stars will put on a bicycle freestyle aerial exhibition.

The Emerson Toyota Kid’s Bike Race will be held at 11:30 a.m. Sunday, June 8. The race will take place in front of the Auburn-Lewiston YMCA. It is a chance for kids age 5 to 10 to show off their riding ability.

Cash and prizes valued at $1,750 will be awarded along with medals for top finishers. All bicycle race entries include a USCF insurance surcharge. All USCF rules apply. Event volunteers are needed. For more information contact John Grenier at 784-7576 or [email protected].

Run/walk events: The St. Mary’s Regional Medical Center 3K Fun Walk will be held at 9 a.m. Sunday, June 8. The 1.5-mile event will begin at the corner of Court and Turner streets. The route is a flat course that showcases Railroad Park in Lewiston and ends along the new River Walk at Festival Plaza in Auburn.

Central Maine Orthopaedics 5K Run at 10 a.m. Sunday, June 8, will also begin at the corner of Court and Turner streets. The course is flat and fast. Participants will run in Auburn and Lewiston over two bridges. The course includes sections of the new River Walk and will end at the new Festival Plaza.

Race categories by age are as follows: 14-19, 20-29, 30-39, 40-49, 50-59, 60-69, 70-79 and 80+. Awards will be presented to the top overall male and top overall female, as well as the top three finishers in each age category.

Fees are $12 for 5K if registered before Tuesday, June 8, and $5 for the Fun Walk. Those wishing to register on race day may do so at a cost of $15. Race day registration will be held from 8 to 9:30 a.m. at the Key Bank entrance across from the YMCA.
