MANSFIELD, Conn. – Sohpomore pitcher Marc Cahill scattered four hits while fanning seven to lift the University of Southern Maine to a 1-0 win in Game 1 before Joey Serfass evened up the day for Eastern Connecticut with a 6-0 shutout over the Huskies in Game 2.

In a classic pitchers duel, the Huskies (24-14) picked off the only run of the game in the second inning when Adam Lemieux hit a clutch two-out single to drove in freshman Tip Fairchild of Monmouth, who had doubled earlier.

The Warriors (33-6) loaded the bases against the Huskies starter Jason Thibodeau, setting the stage for junior Dwight Wildman to greet relief pitcher Pat Liddy of Wilton with a two-run single. Senior second baseman Andy Lang had a pair of hits in the second game for the Huskies.

Maine sweeps Albany

COLONIE, N.Y.-The University of Maine picked up a pair of wins Saturday handing Albany College a 7-0 loss in game one and a 5-3 setback in the second game of the doubleheader.

Mike Collar (7-2) picked up the win in game one throwing a complete game striking out seven without surendering a walk.

The Black Bears scored two runs in the fifth inning and then put the game away with a five run sixth inning all with out an extra base hit.

Adam Kroft (3-3) took the loss for Albany.

Game two saw the Black Bears notch a 5-3 win behind Mike MacDonald.

Joe Drapeau, Brent Ouellette, and Alain Picard each rapped a double in the victory.

Bowdoin sweeps Colby

WATERVILLE-Jared Lemieux went 4-for-4, including two home runs and a double, scoring four runs to lift Bowdoin College to a 6-5 win over Colby College in the second game of a doubleheader Saturday in NESCAC baseball action.

The Polar Bears (17-15) also took the opener 11-4.

Game one saw Bowdoin blow the game open in the third inning scoring seven runs, Tom McMahon had a home run and a single while Andrew Workman added a solo home run in the victory.

B.J. Lippert, and Eric Roy added home runs in game two as Bowdoin cruised in both victories.

Husson 14, Lyndon State 3

BANGOR-Craig Harvey pitched a complete game as Husson College handed Lyndon State a 14-3 setback in the Southern Athletic Conference Tournament play Saturday afternoon.

Harvey moved to 7-1 on the season sending the Braves to the second round of the tournament.

Billy Kane went 4-5 with a tripple and double driving in three runs while Harvey added three safeties including a triple and four RBI in the lopsided win.

Lyndon State was led by Matt Durson who had three hits including a triple.

Thomas 8, UMF 5

BANGOR-Thomas College handed the University of Maine at Farmington a 8-5 setback in tournament action Saturday afternoon at Husson College.

Scott Brawn paced the Terriers attack with two hits including a home run.

Chris Teterault gained the win going eight innings striking out seven before giving way to Sean Brawn in the ninth inning.

Tom Ventura belted a homerun for the Beavers.

Tufts wins a pair

WATERVILLE – Deena Davidian set a NESCAC record for most hits in a tournament with seven to lead Tufts to two wins on the first day of the NESCAC Softball Championships at Colby College Saturday.

The Jumbo’s (24-10) lead off hitter, Davidian went 4-for4 in Tufts’ 4-0 win over Williams College and notched three more hits in the 4-0 win over Colby.

Colby won their first contest over Middlebury, 4-0, behind the pitching of first-year Lauren Olmsted.

Tufts, the two-time defending NESCAC champs, will play in Sunday’s championship game at 12:30 p.m.

Wheaton sweeps St. Joseph’s

STANDISH – Wheaton edged St. Joseph’s College 3-2 in Game 1 and went on a fifth inning tear in the nightcap to sweep the Monks with a 9-2 win in baseball action Saturday.

Wheaton (25-8) outhit the Monks (17-18) in both games by wide margins of 10-4 and 11-3 in each of the games respectively. Scott Beattie went 3-for-4 for Wheaton in Game 1, while Keith Cooper did the same in the nightcap. Cooper had three doubles in the twinbill.

Softball

Maine 5, Hartford 3

ORONO – The University of Maine Black Bears grabbed four runs in the third inning for all they would need to defeate Hartford 5-3 in Game 2 of a doubleheader in college softball action Saturday.

The third baseman Lauren Dulkis went 2-for-3 with a double to lead the Black Bear (23-20) offense. The designated hitter Molly McKinney notched an RBI with two hits for a perfect day at the plate.

Hartford (7-24) slugged the ball a bit harder than the Black Bears for three doubles, but had one less hit overall and failed to produce the necessary runs.

Thomas advances to finals

WATERVILLE – Thomas College pitcher Joy Ireland pitched a two-hit shutout as the Terriers sent the University of Maine at Farmington Beavers packing with a 5-0 win in the winners bracket of the Sunrise Conference 2003 Women’s Softball Championship Tournament.

The Terriers zapped Lyndon College in the first game of the tournament with a 10-0 shelling.

A triple play in the second inning of the UMF game against the University of Maine at Presque Isle ended a rally and allowed the Beavers to earn a 2-1 win in their first matchup of the day.

Tiffany Miller had a three run triple in the third game to key the UMPI Owls to a 7-2 win to stay alive in the tournament.

Women’s Lacrosse

Middlebury 13, Colby 3

MIDDLEBURY, VT-Middlebury College defeated Colby College 13-3 in the semifinal round of the NESCAC Lacrosse championships Saturday afternoon.

The Panthers (12-1) jumped out to a quick 4-0 lead in the first half scoring three goals in 33 seconds to effectively put the contest out of reach. Char Glessner blasted three goals and added three assists while Meg Bonney chipped in with a pair of goals to provide the offensive punch.

The Whte Mules (13-4) were paced by Kate Wheeler with a pair of goals and Ally King who had a goal and an assist in the loss.

Sarah Grenert needed only four saves to register the win.
