LEWISTON – After playing 48 minutes of lacrosse, players from St. Dom’s and Lewiston came together in the middle of Don Roux Field in Lewiston and took a knee Saturday.
For the second straight season, Bates College lacrosse coach Peter Lasagna presented the most valuable player in the game between the two rival schools with the Morgan McDuffee Award, named for the former Bates player killed in Lewiston in 2002.
“This award started because of these two teams,” said Lasagna. “It started when they decided to honor Morgan on their own. They probably had no idea how much that means to us. This sport and this award are ways to help continue building bridges between the community and Bates College.
Ben Fournier tallied two goals and added two assists and earned the award while playing for Lewiston.
“It’s a huge honor,” said Fournier. “Coach Lasagna said today that there was no better way to immortalize Morgan than to present this award every year. I’ve been involved with Bates athletes for a while when they coached the local program, and now with their summer camps, and that just adds to it.”
“I think what made him stand out today was his unselfish play,” said Lasagna of Fournier. “He was always in position to make the pass when he needed to.”
