BETHEL – The Mahoosuc Land Trust is sponsoring a birding tour of the Gateway property at 7 a.m. Saturday, May 10, led by noted naturalist Chris Lewey. All that will be needed are boots and binoculars.

Lewey is executive director of RAVEN Interpretive Wildlife Center in New Hampshire. He has led field trips for the Maine Audubon Society, Smithsonian Study Tours, and the National Wildlife Federation. He is a registered Maine Guide, a nature photographer, and a master bird bander.

All are invited, there is no charge. The property is located at the junction of Route 26 and the Intervale Road just before entering Bethel from the south. Turn onto the Intervale Road and park there, not on Route 26. For more information call 928-2062.

RUMFORD – Tri-County Health Services will hold an open house from 4 to 6 p.m. Wednesday, May 21, at 218 Penobscot St. Tour the facility, meet the staff and learn more about women’s health care services.

Gould film

BETHEL – The Western Mountains Senior College will present the film “The Prize” at 1 p.m. Wednesday, May 14, in the McLaughlin Science building at Gould Academy. The film will last longer than the two-hour class time. The film is based on the book of the same title by Daniel Yergin, one of the leading authorities on the world oil industry and international politics. He reveals how and why oil has become the largest industry in the world, leading to wealth, power and war. The great breadth of the oil history reaches from John D. Rockefeller to the Bush family and Saddam Hussein, as the role played by the “black gold” from Pearl Harbor to Kuwait. This presentation has been made available as part of a Senior College seminar on oil and foreign relations given by Dorothy Dunton during this spring semester. It is open to the public and free of charge.

SummerFest

CANTON – The Canton Volunteer Fire & Rescue department will host the second annual Canton SummerFest Saturday, June 14, at the Canton Municipal building and in the ball field across the street. There will be a flea market/craft fair from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. in the municipal building, tables are available for $10 and $15. In the ball field there will be a firefighter’s muster from 10 a.m. to noon. Door prizes, food, refreshments, games, dunk tank, petting zoo, horse and pony rides, homemade pie judging contest, women’s fry pan throwing contest and the Canton Jail will be open. The committee is also trying to finalize plans for a live band. Admission to the ball field will be $5 per adult; age 10-17 $3; under 10 free. Children must be accompanied by an adult. In front of the fire station the Whitney Masonic Lodge 167 will be hosting a chicken barbecue at noon for $5 per meal. This year’s profits will go toward the four wheeler account.
