AUBURN – Goodman Wiper & Paper Inc., 120 Mill St., Auburn, is celebrating its 65th year in business this summer.

Founded by Wilfred Goodman in 1938, and succeeded 10 years later by Joel Goodman, the firm originally sorted mixed garments, or rags, that were collected by itinerant “rags and bottles” buyers in those days.

These sorted garments were reprocessed into new fabrics and paper, true recycling in an age before the word “recycling” was invented.

Today, three generations later, the company still plays an important role as a recycler. Their basic product is commercial wiping cloths which are derived from used garments and new textile mill remnants, giving these fabrics additional uses before disposal.

Wipers are used for cleaning and polishing by customers in many industries including paper manufacturing, boat building, auto body and reconditioning, construction, service, and hospitality.

In recent years the company has added to its product mix so that in addition to the industrial wiping cloths they now have available a full line of paper products and restroom supplies. The popular “center-pull” paper towels are a featured item along with their newly acquired line of economical Scott-Canada paper products. Additionally, a full line of oil absorbent compounds, pads, and booms is stocked.
