One of nine men taken into custody by federal agents Jan. 15 in Bethel has been charged with one count of reentry of a removed alien.

Angel Ruben Uyaguari-Llivicura, 25, of Framingham, Massachusetts, and eight others were in a van that allegedly failed to stop for a U.S. Border patrol agent.

An agent was on patrol in Bethel and was stopped at a parking lot on U.S. Route 2 when he observed a van full of individuals, according to the agent’s affidavit filed with U.S. District Court of Maine.

The van passed at a high rate of speed and was driving in the middle of the road, according to the affidavit. The agent pulled out to follow the van, which abruptly turned onto Songo Road, sliding its rear tires in the process, the affidavit stated.

The officer activated lights and sirens and followed for nearly 2 miles. The van turned onto Skillings Road and continued until it turned into a driveway. The agent saw the doors open and individuals pushing each other to get out while the van was still moving, the agent wrote.

The officer said about eight or nine people ran into the woods. One agent detained one occupant of the van. Other agents pursued the individuals who allegedly ran. One agent followed footprints in the snow for about 10 minutes but the individuals continued to run. The officer was yelling “Border Patrol, stop” in Spanish but they kept running, the affidavit stated.

An agent followed individuals across Grover Hill Road to another area. The officer pursued the group for about 6 miles over the course of about two hours.

Agents detained Uyaguari-Llivicura and four others for immigration purposes, according to the affidavit. They were taken to U.S. Customs and Border Protection’s Rangeley Station for processing.

It is unclear the status or charges, if any, that were filed against the other four people apprehended, but according to a release from Customs and Border Protection nine people were arrested.

Uyaguari-Llivicura’s identity was confirmed by submitting his fingerprints through one or more systems the U.S. Customs and Border Protection has access to.

Uyaguari-Llivicura “was found within the United States of America after having been previously removed” from the country on June 3, 2022, and not having obtained the express consent of the secretary of the Department of Homeland Security to reapply for admission to the U.S., according to the agent’s affidavit.

He is temporarily being held in federal custody until a hearing Thursday in federal court in Portland.
