After reading Debby Cornish’s letter, I decided to correct her on one of her statements (May 8). That is, child killers and molesters do not get off “scot free.”

In fact, not only do they serve time in prison, they are closely surveyed by their probation officers and the state.

There is a new state law coming into effect that will require any child molester to register with the state every three months for the rest of their lives. This is how the state keeps track of them. This makes it virtually impossible for them to get on with their lives after serving time for the offense. It is a constant reminder.

Now, I certainly do not condone their behavior because I too have strong feelings about what has happened to the children who have been offended since I have personally experienced this. However, there are those who have committed this crime who really are stricken by what they did and go through years of remorse. They are sorry for what they did.

So, let’s not throw all offenders into the same barrel. And, really, there is no such thing as “scot free” when you know the facts.
