LEBANON, N.H. (AP) – Laurence Radway, a Dartmouth College political science professor and longtime New Hampshire Democratic activist, has died. He was 84.

Radway died May 7 in the Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center.

He taught at Dartmouth for 39 years, retiring in1989. He served two terms in the New Hampshire House, ran for the U.S. Senate and was chairman of the state Democratic Party during the administration of President Carter.

“He was responsible for getting a lot of Democrats to run for office,” said former student Michael Satzow, of Claremont. “And when he couldn’t find anyone, he ran himself.”

During Radway’s Senate campaign in 1974, he walked 300 miles across the state in the dead of winter, stopping to talk to people at grocery stores and gas stations.
