REVERE, Mass. (AP) – Police said excessive speed appeared to be the cause of a fatal crash in Revere early Saturday morning that killed two Somerville men.

Police said a preliminary investigation indicated Juan Majano, 24, and passenger Marco Hernandez, 22, were traveling at an extremely high rate of speed just after midnight when their 1993 Mazda MPV was unable to negotiate a curve on Revere Beach Parkway.

The vehicle apparently struck a curb and drove through a sign post before slamming into a tree head on, said state police Sgt. David Paine. The crash was so severe the engine block was thrown from the vehicle.

Both men were pronounced dead at the scene.

Police said initial investigation showed no sign of illegal substance use.

One witness said the vehicle was traveling at more than 80 miles per hour.
