PERU – Superintendent John Turner and members of the School Committee presented the Board of Selectmen the 2003-04 school budget Monday night.

Selectman Jim Pulsifer motioned to take $70,000 instead of $35,000 from the undesignated fund and make appropriate changes to article 5.

The School Committee left the room to go into a special meeting to discuss the amendment offered by Pulsifer. They approved changing Article 5 to ask if the town should raise $134,506.63 in additional local funds for fiscal year 2003-04.

The Committee returned to the selectmen’s meeting where the budget was approved with the change. The proposed new mill rate will be lowered by approximately a third of a mill by this change. There will be another School Committee meeting at 7 p.m. June 17 with a public budget hearing.

In other news, the selectmen approved a building permit for David Gatchell.

Pulsifer asked Code Enforcement Officer Joe Hall if he would consider acting on other building issues outside of Shoreland zoning. Hall agreed that he would as long as he felt qualified in the area of concern.

There will be a public hearing for the Comprehensive Planning Grant at 7 p.m. Tuesday, May 20, in the Rockemeka Grange Hall.

Next week’s selectmen’s meeting will be on Tuesday proceeded by a hearing for Richard Powell’s 2003 automobile graveyard permit renewal.

Nominations for Maine Municipal Association officers are being accepted.

The referendum voting on the School Budget will be June 30.
