LEWISTON – Councilors took one more step toward finishing their budget work Tuesday, setting property tax collections at $39.35 million for the coming year.

Councilors will vote on the issue again at their June 3 meeting.

Finance Director Dick Metivier said the decision is one step in determining the city’s property tax rate. That rate won’t be set until July, when the city’s assessed property values are set.

“This is just one of the legs of the stool,” Metivier said.

If the city’s assessed values did not change, Tuesday’s decision would leave the city’s property tax rate level with this year, at $28.89 per thousand dollars of property value. At that rate, a home worth $80,000 would pay about $2,318 in property taxes.
