NEWRY – After reviewing three proposals for reconstruction of the Sunday River Access Road Monday, selectmen decided to hold off awarding a contract until further study can be made on the proposals. For help, they gave the proposal sheets, which include detailed information on the job, to Sunday River Engineer Joe Aloisio.

According to Board Chairman Steve Wight, all proposals were basically the same, but there was some concern about the adequacy of the roadway’s base structure, and he and his colleagues wanted Aloisio to help make a final decision.

Submitting proposals were Pike Industries of Waterford, D.A. Wilson of Bethel, and Steve Swasey of Andover.

Pike Industries delivered an estimate of $111,400 for the basic grinding and repaving of the ski resort’s access road, but added the overall cost would open if gravel is needed to upgrade the roadway base. The cost increase for gravel would be $12.16 per cubic yard of material.

Swasey submitted a proposal including a blanket estimate of $337,500 if the roadway base had to be completely redone, and a second price of $264,590 if only minimal work on the base would be needed. His proposal included milling the old surface, providing signage to protect the workers, repaving, ditching, erosion barriers, loaming and seeding the roadside, correcting the grade and other miscellaneous work needed to complete the project.

D.A. Wilson’s bid was set at $368,559 and included the same basic elements of the project as proposed by Swasey. Wilson also noted that parts of the project would be subcontracted.

After the decision was made to give Aloisio time to study the proposals, the board set 4:15 p.m. Thursday as the date for a special meeting to award a contract.
