WINTER HARBOR (AP) – A body found over the Memorial Day weekend on an island in Frenchman Bay has been transported to the state medical examiner’s office in Augusta for an autopsy, officials said.

People aboard a whale-watching boat out of Bar Harbor spotted the body at around 11 a.m. Sunday on the southwest shore of Jordan Island, the Maine Marine Patrol told the Bangor Daily News.

Sgt. Marlowe Sonksen said he did not know whether the body was that of a man or a woman.

The death was being investigated by Maine State Police and Bar Harbor police.

Bar Harbor police have been investigating the April 28 disappearance of Chris Conley, 30, of Bar Harbor. A police spokesman said Monday that the department had no information whether the dead person found Sunday was Conley.

Police, game wardens and Acadia National Park rangers had searched unsuccessfully this month for Conley, a house painter who officials said had a history of disappearing for days at a time.
