Interviews for a new superintendent are set to begin Monday.

RUMFORD – The SAD 43 Superintendent Search Committee has narrowed down the second field of candidates to five semi-finalists.

Search Committee Chairman David McKivergan said the names of 10 qualified candidates were referred from the Maine School Management Association to the committee for its review last week.

He said the semi-finalists come from Virginia, Michigan, Maryland and Maine. Interviews are scheduled to begin on Monday.

This is the second round of advertising for the position that will be vacated by Superintendent Danny Michaud at the end of June.

During the first round that began in March, 10 qualified candidates were identified and the interview process conducted. However, the committee did not find an appropriate person for the position.

McKivergan said he is more hopeful this time. But if a suitable candidate is not found from the latest round of applicants, he won’t panic.

“We’re in no rush. We have at least five weeks ahead of us,” he said.

And if no one is found by then, he said the district can contract for an interim superintendent until a permanent person is found.

Michaud is leaving the 1,750-student district after serving eight years as superintendent and one year as high school principal.
