Telstar is starting to hit. Those are the five words nobody in Western Class C wanted to hear.

The Rebels ended their regular season by scoring a combined 42 runs in their last two games. The first 26 came against Carrabec, which is near the bottom of the Mountain Valley Conference standings. But lest anyone dismiss that offensive explosion, the Rebels tallied 16 runs in their next game against one of the top teams in the conference, Mountain Valley.

The Rebels did it without the middle of their order swinging the bats. Travis Brooks and Casey Fleet both have been out with leg injuries. Josh Appleby has been academically ineligible.

Telstar coach Bob Remington said there is a good chance all three could be back when the playoffs start next week. Chris Estes, Jake Largess and Jeremy Benson have played well in their place. The trio combined for three hits and five runs scored during their 16-1 season finale win over Mountain Valley.

Remington said he was just as concerned how the loss of the three players would impact the Rebels’ defensively as offensively, particularly behind the plate. Appleby started the season at catcher, with Brooks as the backup. Fortunately the Rebels were thinking ahead when they lost Appleby and had Largess ready to don the tools of ignorance when Brooks went down last week.

“We had a tryout for backup catcher a couple of weeks ago for backup catcher and he won the battle,” Telstar coach Bob Remington said. “I was nervous about whether he would be able to handle Wade (Osgood, the Rebels’ ace who pitched against the Falcons), and he did.”

Goin’ deep for a cause

The American Cancer Society is putting on a home run derby this Saturday at 9 a.m. in Rumford.

Contestants can compete in the adult division (16 and up) or Babe Ruth division (13-15) at Hosmer Field. Little League and softball divisions will compete at the Little League field across the street. It costs $5 to enter and all proceeds go to the American Cancer Society.

“You get 10 outs, just like you do in the pros,” said Mountain Valley coach Steve LaPointe, who is organizing the event. “Everybody I’ve talked to is pretty pumped up about it. Anybody from anywhere can show up at nine o’clock and enter.”
