Beginning today, you will find a new name atop your local news section: “River Valley.”

This change was prompted by a request from the River Valley Growth Council, an economic development group made up of representatives from Andover, Byron, Canton, Dixfield, Hanover, Mexico, Peru, Roxbury, Rumford and Carthage.

We believe the River Valley name is more inclusive and that it better describes the geographic area covered by this edition of the Sun Journal. It also is more in keeping with the names of the Sun Journal’s other sections, Oxford Hills (Norway), Franklin (Farmington) and City (Lewiston-Auburn.)

The names of several community organizations also have been changed in recent years to reflect the trend toward regional cooperation, including the River Valley Chamber of Commerce, the River Valley Healthy Communities Coalition and the River Valley Arts Initiative.

The Sun Journal’s commitment to providing daily local news from this region will not change, nor will staffing levels or the Rumford bureau office location.
