TORONTO (AP) – The Boston Red Sox added Byung-Hyun Kim to the roster on Sunday and designated left-hander Bruce Chen for assignment.

Boston acquired Kim from Arizona on Thursday for third baseman Shea Hillenbrand.

Kim was expected to pitch an inning Sunday and make his first start Tuesday in Pittsburgh.

“It feels great to put this uniform on,” Kim said through an interpreter.

The right-hander had a club-record 36 saves as a closer last season but got his wish to become a starter this year. He was 1-5 with a 3.56 ERA in seven starts.

“I’d love to start, but I’m willing to do whatever the team asks me to do,” Kim said.

The South Korean said he looks up to Pedro Martinez because they have the same physique.

“I love to watch him. I try to learn as much as I can,” said Kim, who is listed at 180 pounds.

Chen already has been cut by Houston and Cincinnati this year.

The Red Sox have 10 days to trade, waive or release Chen. He went 0-1 with a 5.11 ERA in five games, including two starts for Boston.

“I was shocked,” Chen said. “I thought I did what they wanted me to do since I got here. I did all three things they wanted me to do – start, long relief and face lefties. I thought I was doing OK, but I understand.”

The Red Sox claimed Chen off waivers from Houston on May 7.

Boston manager Grady Little said they didn’t want 13 pitchers.

“We felt like we kept the people we have the best chance to win with,” Little said.

Chen made 11 relief appearances this season with Houston, with no record and a 6.00 ERA.

He has spent all or parts of the last six seasons in the majors with the Braves, Phillies, Mets, Expos, Reds and Astros.
