JAY – Jay used a six-run third inning to put the game out of reach as the defending Class C champion and second-seeded Tigers routed No. 10 Georges Valley 15-3 setback in Westrern quarterfinal baseball action Friday afternoon.

Jay will host Boothbay at 1:30 p.m. today in the semifinals.

Three walks, a hit batsman and back-to-back doubles by Jacob Turner and Josh Armandi accounted for six runs in the bottom of the third inning as the Tigers (12-5) cruised to the victory.

Turner went the distance for Jay, surrendering a triple to Randy Maloney for the only extra base hit Georges Valley could muster. Turner also went 2-for-4 with a pair of RBI sand three runs scored. Shawn Jacques hit two singles and a solo home run, driving in three runs, and A. J. Nelson added a solo homer.

Softball Buckfield 2, Greenville 1

BUCKFIELD – Danielle Buswell hurled a one-hitter and struck out 15 batters Friday to lead the Buckfield softball team to a 2-1 Western Class D semifinal win over Greenville.

The defending state champion Bucks advance to Tuesday’s regional final in Gorham against Richmond. It is the seventh straight trip to the Western D final for the defending state champions.

The top-seeded Bucks (13-2) built a 2-0 lead with single runs in each of the first two innings. Colleen Violette scored in the first inning on a passed ball. In the second, Tiffany Dunn reached on an error and later scored on a Lindsay Marston single.

Sacopee 2, Winthrop 1

SOUTH HIRAM – Shala Delea scored on the second half of a double steal in the bottom of the eighth inning Friday to lead No. 2 Sacopee Valley past No. 7 Winthrop 2-1 in a Western Class C softball quarterfinal.

Sacopee Valley (16-1) hosts Georges Valley in the semifinals today. Winthrop concluded its season 10-6.

Delea launched the game-winning rally with a bunt single. After a sacrifice bunt by Carla Mixer and an intentional walk to Elyse White, Michelle Libby grounded into a force out, leaving runners at the corners. When the Ramblers’ infield tossed the ball back to pitcher Katie Wing, Libby broke for second base. Winthrop’s throw was late.

As Libby slid underneath the tag, Delea darted home, also beating the throw by a split second.Winthrop took a 1-0 lead in the top of the sixth. Wing doubled, moved to third on an error and scored on a wild pitch. The Hawks tied it in the bottom half.

Libby pitched a three-hitter for Sacopee, striking out 12 without walking a batter.

Wing scattered seven hits while striking out seven, and the intentional walk in the eighth was her only free pass.
