LEWISTON – There was no secret about what needed to be done.
The Lewiston boys’ tennis team was definitely up to the task as it rolled to win the Class A State Championship before an appreciative crowd at Bates College Saturday morning.
It’s the Blue Devils’ first state crown since winning back-to-back titles in 1994-95. It was Lewiston’s eighth state championship.
The players’ names have changed, but a Chicoine has always been at the helm.
The No. 1 doubles team of Nick Bonnenfant and Jon Damon provided the clincher with a lengthy three-set win as the Blue Devils put things together to beat Deering 4-1.
The decisive win also helped erase the lone blemish on a near-perfect record. Lewiston (15-1) had lost to Deering 3-2 early in the season as each of the five matches were decided by three sets.
“A team needs a good showing by its doubles teams to win states,” Lewiston coach Ron Chicoine said.
Chicoine echoed the words of his father, former coach Rene Chicoine, who had won seven state titles at Lewiston.
“It just proves how correct that statement is because both of our doubles lost last time. We won four of the five matches today, but by no means were the matches easy.”
Bonnenfant and Damon entered into a battle and won the opening set 6-4, but Deering partners Anthony Ramonas and Sam Lowery claimed the second set 6-2. The Blue Devils tandem went for broke and won the deciding set 7-5.
“We had to start over in the third set,” Bonnenfant said. “We had decided it was a new match and the score was 0-0. In this match, we tried to return the balls lower instead of just lobbing it over because that’s how they had been able to beat us the first time.”
Mike Burke and Nate Theriault each remained unbeaten with straight-set wins at Nos. 2 and 3 singles, respectively. Burke, a junior had give Lewiston a commanding 2-0 lead by winning 6-1, 6-2 against Ryan Brennan.
“I had to be more aggressive,” Burke said. “I hadn’t been sure of my shots early on, but then I put some spin on the ball. I had to place my shots in certain locations to make him run around.”
Theriault, a senior captain, beat Joe McGonagle 5-7, 7-5, 6-2.
“I said when we played Lewiston the first time that I knew we’d see them again,” retiring Deering coach Larry Nichols said.
The Blue Devils’ Adam Wilding never found a groove and lost soundly 6-0, 6-1 to Pat Conway at No. 1 singles. Conway (16-0) is planning to attend and play tennis at Bates next fall.
In a match lasting approximately 55 minutes, Bryce Bryant and James Morin won 6-0, 6-0 against Joe Roy-Mayhew and Noah Shibley at second doubles.
