LEWISTON – The scenario couldn’t have been any tighter. The respective No. 1 players were the only ones on the courts with the team score knotted at two-games apiece.
Something had to give, and things started to unravel quickly.
Kelly Graham of Kennebunk maintained her compose throughout the match and eventually prevailed 6-2, 6-0 over Amy Sarrazin to give the Rams their first ever Class A state championship with a 3-2 triumph over Lewiston Saturday morning.
Kennebunk completed an unbeaten season by dethroning the two-time defending state champions. The Blue Devils also had their win streak snapped at 46 matches.
Graham, a finalist in the 2003 state singles tournament, successfully countered by Sarrazin’s power returns and was in complete control.
“It was a real tough meet,” Lewiston coach Anita Murphy said. “But, it all came down to the final match. That’s exactly how Kennebunk coach (Pat Pickering) and I had figured it might come down to. I thought we might have been able to pull out both doubles matches, but it’s nice to see her win her first state title.”
Lewiston received its initial point as the No. 2 doubles tandem of Amy Bergeron and Jessica Roy won a 7-3 tiebreaker in the first set and used the momentum for a 7-6, 6-3 against Kathryn Rouillard and Catlin O’Brien.
In a marathon match, Katie A. Morin remained unbeaten at No. 2 singles by outlasting Alex Hardenbrook 7-5, 6-3. Morin broke her opponent’s serve to win the opening set and then positioned her own shots in various locations to close out the match.
“It was a fun match,” Morin said. “It was a battle and there was a lot of long points within each game. It was the best match of my career at Lewiston High School. I thought I was playing against myself because she did everything I did.”
Lewiston’s Beth Melanson and Roxanne Healy lost a tough 7-6 (7-1), 6-1 match at No. 1 doubles to Di Einsiedlerd and Sam Tuceri.
Alli Bleakney was ambushed by Tara O’Brien 6-1, 6-3 at No. 3 singles.
