Sen. Ethan Strimling from Portland recently wrote a piece lamenting the fact that the Bush tax cut only went to the wealthy (June 2).
I’m not sure if he knows this or not, but two-thirds of the income taxes paid to the IRS come from only 10 percent of the people. Even more interesting is the fact that 25 percent of income taxpayers account for almost 85 percent of the income taxes paid.
So, I’m not sure who else the income tax relief could go to other than the people who pay income taxes.
Does the senator want the government to just send lower income people checks even though they don’t pay taxes?
I think we already do that. It’s called welfare.
