NORWAY – Norway Memorial Library will host “Norway’s Yesterdays,” a four part series of public programs focusing on aspects of the history of Norway. The first in the series will be on Wednesday, June 18, and will feature a presentation by Kirk Mohney of the Maine Historic Preservation Commission. The program will be presented first from 12 noon to 1 p.m. and will be repeated from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m.
Mohney’s talk and slide show will be based on the work which he did for Norway’s nomination for the National Register of Historic Districts. It will be an overview of the development of Main Street, Norway, as a commercial, religious, residential and service center. The slides will include historic images as well as contemporary views in order to show the mix of styles and features that make up the downtown area of Norway.
Mohney has been invited to Norway as part of a series of four programs to be presented over the summer to focus on Norway’s history and to bring attention to the effort being made by the Norway Downtown Revitalization group.
This group of citizen volunteers are working with the Maine Downtown Center over the next three years to further develop the historic and economic aspects of Norway’s Main Street. The topics for future programs in this series will be Lake Pennasseewassee, Norway’s Notable Citizens, and the Norway Fire of 1894.
The public is invited to attend either session of the program on June 18. For further information call the Norway Memorial Library at 743-5309.
