WATERFORD – Former U.S. Rep. David Emery, who chairs the Republican Reapportionment team, was featured speaker at the May meeting of the Oxford County Republican Committee at the Wilkins House on May 13.

After a lasagna dinner prepared by members of the Hannibal Hamlin Republican Women’s Club, Emery discussed the work of his committee in setting boundaries for various districts throughout the state.

He stated that his guiding principle that has worked so well in the past was to make decisions regarding districts by following the law in both spirit and form. The courts have usually upheld the Republican plans in recent times because of that principle, he said.

Several of the proposed plans were posted so that everyone attending could determine what was being considered. Emery expressed optimism that the Republican plans would have a better chance of support from the court since they adhere as much as possible to the legal guidelines.

During the business portion of the meeting, State Rep. Sawin Millett (R-Waterford) briefed the audience on the latest budget developments, bond issues and health insurance proposals.
