LISBON – Lisbon Police will soon have a new tool not only to help them monitor speed on various roads, but provide valuable data such as traffic volume and times of day when traffic is heaviest.

Using a combination of local law enforcement grant money and anticipated funding from the Maine Bureau of Highway Safety, along with $1,400 in matching local funds, the Police Department is in the process of acquiring a $13,000 speed measuring trailer that may be put into service as soon as early July.

Police Chief David Brooks says the trailer, a “new and improved model, will not just sit and flash speed” as motorists pass by – it will be equipped with a radar unit and an analytical software computer package that will provide statistical analysis such as vehicle speed, time of day, and traffic counts.

The trailer will be used on a rotating basis throughout the town, first in areas where there are frequent complaints about speeding cars, Brooks said, and eventually in every neighborhood. Neighborhood Watch groups in areas such as Wing, School and High Streets have been advocating the use of a speed measuring trailer, Brooks said.
