RUMFORD – Saturday marked the culmination of graduation weekend for the 2003 graduates of Mountain Valley High School that started with the senior banquet on Friday evening.

Class night followed the banquet and some 84 seniors received scholarships. The total amount of scholarships awarded was well over $50,000. Individual scholarships started with $100 and went up into the thousands. One was for full tuition.

“Learn from yesterday, live for today, hope for tomorrow” was the class motto. The class flower was white rose and class song was “I Won’t Back Down.”

Among the graduates this year was Jim Scott, a veteran of 27 years who decided to go back to school. Even though he received his GED while serving in the Army, he didn’t have a diploma. He started his career in the United States Air Force and marched with the other seniors on Saturday afternoon to receive his diploma.

Band Director Terry Eldridge led the Mountain Valley High School Concert Band in the processional, a choral selection and an instrumental selection, “An Irish Ayre for Winds.”

Jade Michaele Dunn gave the senior address. Jade has been president of the Regional National Honor Society for two years.

She spoke of how at an early age she learned to organize from a zealous grandmother who scheduled her day with list, upon list, upon list. As a four-year-old, she learned to listen, remember and admire.

She said she was thankful for all the lessons she learned in the latter part of her childhood. As this last stage of a senior’s life ends, another begins. While they are frightened about the future they, are not cowards. She talked about how they, as seniors, were really loosing their identity in a school setting. The captain of the ball team, class president, or whatever, was now past and they faced a new and challenging future.

The class of 2003 presented a variety program consisting of an instrumental group, original poetry, trumpet duet and saxophone solo.

Following this program, Dr. Danny R.P. Michaud, superintendent, gave the confirmation of diplomas and Curt-Randall Bayer, principal, presented the diplomas with Bertha Barrett, chairperson of SAD 43 Board of Directors, assisting.
