BIDDEFORD (AP) – A fire that destroyed a downtown apartment building and injured two firefighters last week was intentionally set, state fire marshal Michael Kelley said Monday.

“We have quite a few leads,” he said.

The fire ripped through the building at 30 Mt. Vernon St. last Wednesday night. Firefighters battled the blaze for three hours. Investigators said the fire started at or near the rear fire escape.

Call firefighter Peter Pelletier was hospitalized for chest pains and later released. Firefighter Sean Smith was treated at the scene when a nail went through his boot.

The building was condemned and vacant at the time. It was scheduled to be sold at auction the day after the fire, but has been declared a total loss. Auctioneers delayed the sale of the property until at least Thursday.
