FARMINGTON – A Village Corp. Appeals Board will hold a public hearing on an application for a variance to allow a bed and breakfast in a residential area.

The Farmington Village Corp. has its own zoning plan within the town of Farmington.

But the zoning plan established in 1955 doesn’t allow for a bed and breakfast in a residential area.

The public hearing is at 3 p.m. Wednesday, June 25, in the conference room at 136 High St.

The Village Corp.’s board supports the variance for the 102 Main St. property, but it doesn’t have authority to grant the variance to the three-story house with barn at the intersection of Belcher Road and Main Street, said Business Manager Jane Woodman. The Appeals’ Board does, she said. One side of the street is residential and the other side is business, Woodman said. Back in 1955, bed and breakfasts were uncommon. If the appeal is granted, Woodman said, the area would not be rezoned, only the variance would be allowed.

Sheila Leavitt, personal representative for the estate of Earl Hennings, has requested a variance to allow the bed and breakfast. Leavitt was unavailable for comment Tuesday.

The house was originally in the family of Lillian Norton, also known as opera diva Lillian Nordica.

All interested Farmington Village Corp. residents are invited to attend the public hearing.
