AUBURN HILLS, Mich. – Swin Cash scored 20 points as Detroit beat the Los Angeles Sparks 87-78 in overtime Tuesday night, snapping at 18 games the longest winning streak in the seven-year history of the WNBA.
The two-time defending champion Sparks won their final nine games of last season and started this one 9-0. That tied the Sparks’ own 2-year-old mark for the fastest start in league history.
Detroit maintained its lead in the Eastern Conference with what might have been the biggest win in its six seasons.
After a strong start, the Shock trailed by 16 points early in the second half. A 12-2 run gave them a chance to come back, and they made just enough stops and shots to force overtime.
Ruth Riley made two free throws with 3.7 seconds left to tie it at 76. Detroit scored the first seven points in overtime before an excited crowd of 5,411.
Fever 71, Sting 60
INDIANAPOLIS – Tamika Catchings had 29 points and 10 rebounds, and Natalie Williams scored 16 points as the Indiana Fever beat the Charlotte Sting 71-60.
Catchings fell three points shy of her career high and had her third double-double of the season. She was 8-for-17 from the field, breaking out of a scoring slump that saw fail to score more than 13 points in each of the last three games.
Storm 61, Mercury 60
PHOENIX -Lauren Jackson made two free throws with 24 seconds left to give the Seattle Storm a 61-60 victory over the Phoenix Mercury.
Phoenix had a chance for the win, but Tamicha Jackson missed a 3-point attempt at the buzzer.
Jackson had 23 points for the Storm (4-4), while Kamiloa Vodichkova added 12 points.
Comets 77, Lynx 68
MINNEAPOLIS – Tina Thompson scored a season-high 30 points for the injury-depleted Houston Comets, spurring a 77-68 win over the Minnesota Lynx. The victory snapped a four-game road losing streak for the Comets, who are missing Cynthia Cooper and Sheryl Swoopes.
Liberty 70, Monarchs 61
NEW YORK – Vickie Johnson scored 18 points and Becky Hammon added 17 as the New York Liberty beat the Sacramento Monarchs 70-61.
Crystal Robinson hit four 3-pointers and scored 16 points for New York, and reserve Elena Baranova had three points, seven rebounds and two assists.
Yolanda Griffith had 21 points and 16 rebounds for the Monarchs (3-7), who committed 14 turnovers that led to 23 points for the Liberty (4-3).
