PERU – Maine Municipal Association’s town insurance has Peru selectmen concerned about the Rockemeka Grange Hall. MMA will only insure the building for $37,820 and the policy does not cover the contents. One major concern is the fact that the building stores the archives for the historical society.

Families in Crisis also uses the building for storing food for the needy as well as cooking and serving meals once a month. Though they have been asked several times to let the selectmen know about their insurance for using the Grange Hall, it has not been forthcoming.

Selectman Andy St. Pierre motioned to send a letter to the group requesting insurance information within 30 days. Since cooking is done, there is always danger of a fire and the Hall couldn’t be replaced even in its present condition for three times the amount of the MMA insurance.

Selectman Kathy Hussey also mentioned that the voting booths had been taken down by Family in Crisis and had not been put back up.

Road Commissioner David Gammon said he would be closing Ridge Road tomorrow for additional blasting to get rid of more ledge. He said it must be done for the road surfacing as well as proper ditching for water that at times brings five or six gallons a minute down the road from the ledge. Selectman Ron Chartier asked Gammon what all the rock problems have done to his budget. Gammon replied that it had pretty well done in his budget, but the work must be done right. The selectmen all agreed.

Chartier reported that he had contacted Marsha McKenna to consider being Peru’s animal control officer. She has agreed and the selectmen moved to contact her to start on July 1 and invite her to come to the next selectmen’s meeting to clarify some details of her contract.

In other business, Selectman Jim Pulsifer reported that the work around the Town Office was almost complete except for leveling and planting.

A building permit was approved for Clifford Parsons pending a plumbing permit.

The Worthly Pond Association’s request for use of the Grange Hall for the group’s annual meeting on July 6 was approved. Also a request from the growth council for use of the Grange on July 10 was approved.

Hussey reported that someone had come to the office concerned about the number of ATVs on his land. Selectmen told her to inform the person that they should file a written complaint with the sheriff’s office or the game warden.

Selectmen will meet with the School Committee at 6 p.m. Tuesday before the public hearing on the budget at 7 p.m.
