The business community tracked several issues during the legislative session. Here are some of the highlights:

n Dirigo Health: Passed on the last day of the session, this is the state’s ambitious program to cover 180,000 uninsured residents, and hold down the costs of health care.

n Tax reform: Pushed to a special session June 27. Democrats and Republicans are trying to craft legislation, debating issues such as a local-option sales tax, skyrocketing property taxes and spending controls.

n Pine Tree Zones:
The governor’s plan passed the Legislature in May, and will effectively create eight tax-free zones for business in Maine, of up to 500 acres each.

n Community college system: Passed in March, this bill calls for the transformation of the technical colleges into a system of comprehensive community colleges.

n $60 million development bond:
Proposed by the governor and passed by voters June 10. The bond emphasizes medical and other technology research. Economists project the bond will create more than 4,000 new jobs, and $335 million in economic activity.

n Unemployment benefits: The Legislature passed a bill that makes it easier for part-time workers to collect unemployment benefits, plus other eligibility expansions. Business leaders say this unfairly costs companies in Maine, and will soon require an unemployment tax increase.
