HANOVER – Residents will act on several school budget articles and decide whether to close several roads during the winter at a special town meeting Tuesday.

The meeting takes place at 6 p.m. June 24 in the old school house, known as the Town House.

Hanover maintains its own school board and pays tuition for students to attend SAD 43 in Rumford, SAD 44 in Bethel or private, nonsectarian schools.

This year’s budget comes in at $171,626 to educate elementary and secondary students, $12,461 for the Region 9 School of Applied Technology, and $603 for adult education, also through Region 9. Residents are also asked to act on paying the town’s share of debt service.

The second major part of the town meeting warrant has been somewhat controversial. Many of the residents of South Pond Road, which winds around Howard Pond, have asked the town to maintain the road during the winter.

At the town meeting last November, a majority of residents voted against a similar request.

Town officials have said that to bring the dirt road up to standard would be too costly. It could only be maintained by the town during the winter, which involves plowing, if it was brought up to standard.

Some South Shore road residents have argued that since seven or eight families live on the road year round, it should be kept open. A group of residents pay to have a portion of the road plowed in winter.
