RUMFORD – Selectmen on Thursday voted to extend the sewer line for the entire one mile or so of the Wyman Hill Road.

A few weeks ago, the board approved building about half the extension, then wait for a grant to help pay for the rest.

But because at least one new home is currently planned for just beyond the original stopping point, the board decided to extend the sewer line along the Wyman Hill Road to Franklin Annex.

Town Manager Robert Welch said about 16 homes will be served by the new line. Nearly 30 more homes on streets branching off the road could also hooked into the line sooner than originally planned.

The cost to extend the line up Wyman Hill Road is expected to be about $350,000.

In other matters, the board awarded the contract for a new pickup truck to O’Connor GMC of Augusta for $24,554, including trade-in, and the contract for a new dump truck to Whited Truck Center of Bangor for $66,190, including trade-in.

They also switched property and casualty insurance coverage to the Kyes Agency, which turned in a bid more than $15,000 lower than current carrier, Maine Municipal Association.

Also on Thursday, the board:

• Agreed to support the candidacy of Mechanic Falls Town Manager Dana Lee for vice president of the Maine Municipal Association.

• Denied a handicapped parking space request for 234 Knox St.

• Denied a request for a crosswalk near the Rumford/Mexico bridge along Lincoln Avenue.

• Set a special meeting for 5 p.m. on Monday, June 30, to sign end-of-fiscal-year warrants.
