MEXICO – Residents voted at their annual town meeting this month to grant a 2 percent discount on property taxes paid early.

On Wednesday, details on when the discount takes effect and other questions will be worked out.

The special town meeting begins at 6 p.m. in the town office.

Town Clerk Penny Duguay said a date wasn’t determined for when the discount kicked in. For example, she said, the first half of property taxes is due on Oct. 31. Discounts won’t be given for those who pay the day before. Residents and selectmen will determine the definition of “early.”

They will also decide whether the discount will be applied to both property tax payment dates. Mexico residents can split their property tax payments without penalty by paying half in October and the other half in April. Those who pay after the due date are assessed 7 percent annual interest.

Following the special town meeting, at 6:30 p.m., a public hearing on a hawker’s and peddler’s license requested by Dan Pelletier will be held. This will be followed by the board’s regular meeting.

Agenda items include appointments to various boards and committees for the upcoming fiscal year, a discussion on town-owned property, and reports by the town manager, road commissioner and selectmen.
