Editor’s note: Every day there are rays of light that shine into the lives of people through their neighbors, their co-workers, their families and even through complete strangers. This column is devoted to exposing these sunbeams to the light and offering readers an opportunity to share good news. We plan to occasionally offer up our own sunbeams, too.
Memorial Day
The Sun Journal is to be congratulated for the extensive coverage of the Memorial Day ceremonies held at the new Veterans Memorial Park. This put a ray of sunshine on an otherwise dismal parade.
We had several hundred American flags to be handed out to spectators along the parade route. Unfortunately, we still have them.
Oh, well, maybe next year.
To all the veterans organizations, color guards, military units, the group of band members from Lewiston and Edward Little high schools and the hundreds of patriotic spectators who attended the ceremonies, we, veterans, thank you!
Emmett Stuart, Auburn
Real benefit
A celebration of health, healing and recovery took place on May 4 as the Rape Education and Crisis Hotline held the fifth annual Spring Benefit at the Bethel Inn & Country Club. The theme of this year’s fashion show was “Celebrating the Human Form.”
REACH selected this theme as part of its ongoing commitment to exemplify life-affirming action in the face of the devastating effect of all types of sexual violence on male and female victims and survivors, and on their families and communities. The benefit was intended as a celebration of life, health and healing and a bold statement about claiming these in the aftermath of sexual violence.
The event exceeded our expectations. All who attended had a truly exceptional day.
There were many people who helped us achieve this. The Board of Directors and staff of REACH wants to extend our sincere thanks.

Healthy walk
The Oxford Hills March of Dimes Committee would like to thank the many businesses and volunteers who made this year’s walk a success in the Oxford Hills.
Checkpoint sponsors included four area banks and one area industry. A special thank you to Lions Club members who tirelessly donated their time to be our cooks as well as pick up volunteers in need of transportation.
To keep walkers safe the Hand Radio Club and the Law Enforcement Class from OHCHS assisted participants and kept traffic moving.
A local ambulance service gave its assistance with the crowd of walkers to make sure everyone made it through the 6.2 mile walk.
Everyone appreciated the wonderful rendition of the National Anthem that started the walk. Refreshments were greatly enjoyed by participants thanks to the checkpoint sponsors and other area businesses.
Thanks to all the committee members for all the time and effort in making this year’s fund-raiser for the health of all babies successful.

for the Oxford Hills March of Dimes Committee,
