TAMPA, Fla. (AP) – New York Yankees center fielder Bernie Williams took fly balls and grounders in the outfield Saturday as part of his rehabilitation program following knee surgery last month.
Williams had surgery to repair torn cartilage in his left knee May 27. He could rejoin the team by the All-Star break.
The five-time All-Star and four-time Gold Glove winner also took batting practice for the fourth straight day and continued running and throwing programs.
Pitcher Jon Lieber threw batting practice for the second time in four days. It was the first two times he has faced hitters since undergoing major elbow surgery last August.
Lieber signed a two-year free-agent contract during the offseason. He went 20-6 in 2001 for the Chicago Cubs and was selected for the NL All-Star team.
Lieber is scheduled to throw BP again Thursday and could pitch in a minor league game within the next few weeks.
The possibility of Lieber joining the Yankees later this season has not been ruled out.
Reliever Antonio Osuna, on the 15-day disabled list with a right groin strain, had a long toss session. He also took part in an extensive on-field strengthening workout.
Shortstop Erick Almonte, sidelined by a right knee injury, took batting practice.
and ran the bases. He might start a rehab assignment in the next few days.
Almonte hit .272 with 11 RBIs filling in for the injured Derek Jeter earlier this season. He was optioned to Triple-A Columbus on May 13 to make room for Jeter and was hurt four days later.
Pitcher Jose Contreras, out with a strained right shoulder, threw for 12 minutes off flat ground. He resumed a throwing program Friday.
Contreras is scheduled to have an MRI Thursday to determine the next step in his rehab.
