FARMINGTON – Town officials will seek residents’ input next month as they continue to develop a hazard mitigation plan. Town Manager Richard Davis said the plan is required so the town can continue to be eligible for mitigation grants.

The mitigation covers actions taken to reduce or eliminate long-term risk to human life and property from hazards.

Davis said an example could be a too-small culvert that requires repeated visits from area crews.

A few places have been identified in town that have recurring roadside erosion problems, usually on steep slopes, Davis said.

The four parts of emergency management are mitigation, preparedness, response and recovery. Mitigation’s purpose is to reduce or eliminate the need to respond.

A town’s hazard mitigation plan identifies the community’s major hazards and develops goals and strategies to minimize them.

Davis said community members may have valuable information on sites with recurring flooding problems or other issues that could help officials in drafting the plan.

Residents may give that input at an informational meeting at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday, July 23, in the conference room at the Farmington Municipal Building.
