The White House pronounced “The world (i.e. GWB) will not tolerate nuclear weapons in Iran…”

Apparently the world has no difficulty tolerating the withdrawal of the U.S. from its commitment to the anti-ballistic missile treaty, failure to endorse inspection requirement for chemical and biological weapons, refusal to ban land mines, retention of some 6,000 nuclear bombs (since Russia didn’t agree to a mutual reduction), requested appropriations for research on low yield nuclear weapons, and the Pentagon’s Nuclear Posture Review, studying integration of “nuclear capacity” with conventional military strategy and considering preemptive first use of nuclear weapons in the event of “surprising military developments!”

The administration projects the image of a heavenly deity hurling thunderbolts down on the wicked.

Of course a God knows who the wicked are!

This is the next move in the administration’s campaign to remake the Middle East in our own image, and for our own interest (as they conceive it) before we’ve even swept up the debris in Afghanistan, let alone Iraq.

I’d gladly allot my hard-earned taxpayer dollars for education in Middle Eastern history for advisers around the president.

Condoleeza Rice said she’s concerned about Iranian women’s rights. Today there are women members of parliament in Iran.

It’s been 24 years since the revolution, and reform has been proceeding for some years. It’s erratic and difficult, involving strongly opposed interests.

Why the revolution happened in the first place is a whole other story.
