GREENWOOD – Town Manager Carol Whitman told selectmen Tuesday that she approved plans to start work on the cofferdam for the Alder River.

A cofferdam, a dam build behind a dam, will be constructed just above the Alder River Dam so work on the sluice gate and berms on either side can be completed.

Andre’s Construction of Bethel will be doing the work that will cost between $4,500 and $5,000.

“They will be putting in the cofferdam when the water warms up and gets lower, probably in August,” Whitman said.

She said the dam would consist of thick wooden boards that will be dropped into slotted steel beams.

Whitman also told selectmen that the public officials liability insurance will drop about $1,000. She said Kyes Currier & Dubord Insurance of Farmington said the lower price was due to competition. The total cost of the insurance will be about $2,500 per year.

Selectman Ivan Roberts reported that Maine Department of Transportation representative Brian Keezer, reviewed and approved sites for two new crosswalks.

A crosswalk will be placed by the Post Office on Route 26 near the town hall and one will be put just south of the Round Pond Corner Store.

Roberts said the DOT would provide pedestrian crossing signs.
