POLAND – Nick Berube drilled a seeing-eye single just past the outstretched arms of Gayton Post’s second baseman with two outs and two strikes in the bottom of the seventh inning to send a pair of runs across the plate and give Poland a 4-3 win in Legion baseball action Monday evening.

“I had struggled against (Gayton starter Ryan) O’Hara all night, going 0-for-3 in previous bats, and was just trying to see the ball and get my bat on it” said Berube of his game-winning hit.

“The whole team had been kept off balance, we were fortunate to get a couple of runners on in the seventh” said Poland’s coach Charlie Green.

Gayton had jumped out to a quick 2-0 lead in the top of the first inning as Ryan Turgeon (two hits) led off with a single. A fielder’s choice by Ben Mendelson that Poland could not convert to an out, and a single off the bat of Shawn Sabine accounted for the runs. But an alarming trend of stranding runners would come back to haunt the Post 153 squad as they left nine runners on in the contest.

“Our lack of ability to get runners home definitely hurt us” said Gayton’s coach John Hessler.

Tyler Turgeon added a pair of hits for Gayton in the loss.

Nick Colby was the only repeat hitter for Poland with a pair of singles.

Jerry Goss notched the win coming on in relief of Kyle Purington in the top of the seventh inning.

O’Hara took the loss despite striking out eight and walking one in a complete game effort.
