BARNSTABLE, Mass. (AP) – A dog missing for five days was rescued on Wednesday after people heard howls coming from underground in the Hyannis woods.

“The dog was barking and howling and whatnot and wanted to be out of there, no doubt about that,” said Hyannis Fire Capt. Joseph Cabral.

Cody, a basset hound mix, was freed after rescuers dug a 16-foot trench and removed a section of outflow pipe where the dog was trapped, Cabral said.

The workers immediately gave Cody bottled water that had been poured into a firefighter’s helmet, Cabral said.

The dog was briefly reunited with its owner, Ken Fowler, then taken to Sandwich Animal Hospital. He was receiving medication and resting comfortably Wednesday afternoon.

A poster Fowler distributed after Cody went missing said he’d disappeared between midnight and 5 a.m. on July 4.

Rescue officials were called to the wooded area near Pitchers Way at about 6:05 a.m. after reports of a dog continuously barking. Workers traced the sound to a 12-inch diameter pipe. Rescue officials and public works employees dug the trench in a little over an hour, then unbolted the section of pipe, removed it and freed Cody.
