DURHAM – Scores of firefighters and fire trucks from five area towns assisted Durham firefighters Tuesday night at a stubborn structure fire on Newell Brook Road about a mile from the Lisbon Falls bridge.

Firefighters from Pownal, Lisbon Falls, Freeport, New Gloucester and Brunswick responded to the call that was reported at 9 p.m.

Newell Brook Road, (Route 9) was closed to all through traffic at the height of the blaze. Traffic was backed up in both directions and motorists were rerouted, although some spectators left their cars at the roadside and walked to get a closer look.

Also at the scene was a Salvation Army mobile feeding unit, Durham First Responders and Northeast Ambulance. It was unknown if there were any injuries.

Firefighters remained at the scene late into the night.
