CARTHAGE – Three adults and two children were transported to hospitals from Rumford to Portland Saturday after a violent wreck on Route 142.

All but one child and his mother were treated and released, according to Franklin County police.

Those injured included Linda Hutchinson, 45, of Carthage, her daughter Jennifer Swett, 26, of Carthage, Swett’s 3- and 4-year-old boys, and John Snowman, 27, of Norway.

Hutchinson, Snowman and Swett’s 4-year-old son were treated at Rumford Hospital and released. Swett was transported by ambulance to Central Maine Medical Center in Lewiston and admitted for treatment. A LifeFlight helicopter flew Swett’s 3-year-old son to Maine Medical Center in Portland where he was admitted for treatment, Franklin police said in a press release.

The wreck occurred just west of Grover Bridge Road on Route 142 shortly before 12:51 p.m. when Franklin County police received a 911 telephone call about the crash, police said.

Hutchinson was driving a 1997 Dodge Stratus north on Route 142 when she attempted to turn left into a private driveway. Snowman, who was driving south in a 1988 Dodge pickup truck, was unable to stop or avoid Hutchinson, striking her vehicle on the passenger-side front door, police said.

Swett and her children were passengers in Hutchinson’s car, police said.

Traffic was re-routed through an adjacent property for three hours while the scene was investigated, police said. Both vehicles, which were impounded, were totaled.

The cause of the crash is currently under investigation pending the results of accident reconstruction by the Maine State Police.
