AUBURN – A young Greene woman was able to fight off two would-be abductors Saturday and run to safety.
According to Auburn police, the woman, who is 18 or 19 years old, was walking along Turner Street near Vernon Street around 6 p.m. when she passed a parked red Chevy Cavalier. Two men approached her from behind “grabbed her and tried to get her in the car,” said Patrolman Andy Levesque, one of the responding officers.
The woman fought off her assailants by “kicking and struggling” then ran down Vernon Street, said Levesque. But the men pursued her until she crossed Center Street and made a call to police from the Subway sandwich shop.
Matt Pettengill, an employee at Subway, said the slender woman appeared under control when she entered the store and asked to use a pay phone. The staff let her use the business line to summon police.
“There were three cop cars here by the time it was done,” said Pettengill. “I think they handled the situation pretty well.”
Levesque and his partner, Patrolman Archie Juntura, said the woman described her assailants as white, one tall and one short. Police have suspects and are discussing charges with the District Attorney.
