LEEDS – A Lewiston man was in critical condition Monday after a high-speed rollover on North Road Sunday morning that resulted in the longest accident scene in any responding trooper’s memory.

“We had to call for a forensic mapper to map the scene,” said Maine State Trooper Scott Gosselin, who estimated the scene of the accident ran 900 feet long and 200 feet deep. “We only have tape measures that are 100 feet long,” he said.

The specialized crew took six hours to measure the scene.

Scott Ellis, 32, of Lewiston, lost control of his new pickup truck around 6 a.m. Sunday morning. Ellis sustained severe head and neck injuries in the crash, as well as 11 broken ribs, said Gosselin. He was still listed in critical condition Monday night at Central Maine Medical Center.

According to police, Ellis was traveling too fast on a stretch of North Road when he approached a slight curve, lost control and ended up veering into an adjacent field. Then he overcorrected, got back on the road traveling sideways and began to roll.

The truck, a 2003 GMC Sierra with less than 2,000 miles on it, rolled five times in the field, ejecting Ellis at least 30 feet from where the truck finally came to rest.

Carpentry tools and equipment were scattered all over the field, which is owned by Bill and Louise Sanders. Ellis is a contractor by trade.

Gosselin said Ellis was driving with a suspended license. Police were still reconstructing the accident Monday and interviewing witnesses.
