RUMFORD – The fourth and final week of Summer Fest at the Rumford Public Library begins Monday, July 28, with a visit from the Kids on the Block Puppet Troupe.

The Kids on the Block are a special group of disabled and non-disabled puppets who are dressed and handled to look and act like children. And like real children, each has definite likes and dislikes, talents and limitations. A group of students from Mountain Valley Middle School and Mountain Valley High School, coordinated by SAD 43 school nurse Kathy Sutton, will bring the puppets and their messages on personal safety to life.

On Tuesday, July 29, Stamping Fun with Christine Witas Moore will be featured. Children will have the opportunity to make creative projects using the colorful stamps and inks Moore will make available. Parents or other caregivers are encouraged to accompany younger children to assist them with the projects.

The Summer Reading Program final awards will be presented Wednesday, July 30. All children who participated in Take Flight with Reading and met their reading goals at least once during the four-week reading program are invited. Reading certificates and Subway coupons will be given out, followed by refreshments. Also, those who read all four weeks will receive their certificates for an ice cream treat at Scoops and a half-day of fun at Big Adventure Center in Bethel. Participants are asked to turn in all reading logs by 5 p.m. Tuesday, July 29, so that final reading certificates can be prepared.

The Rumford Library’s Children’s Theatre presents “The Little Mermaid” on Thursday, July 31. Performances will be at 3 p.m. and again at 6:30 p.m. in the auditorium of the Rumford Town Hall.

The final event of the four-week Summer Fest is on Friday, Aug. 1, with the annual Teddy Bear Picnic in the Park at noon. All area children and their teddy bears are welcome to attend. Children are asked to bring a lunch, picnic blanket and their favorite teddy bear, rain or shine.

With the exception of the Friday noon Picnic in the Park and the additional evening performance of “The Little Mermaid,” all other Summer Fest programs are at 3 p.m. and last approximately on hour. All programs are free of charge. Parents are welcome at the programs and are encouraged to attend with younger children.
