LEWISTON – Bids for a repaving project on Main Street between Montello Street and the Greene town line came in well under budget last week.

The paving project could begin next month, said Public Works Director Dave Jones.

“It’s just time to do that work,” Jones said. “It’s a well-used road and it’s rough in some spots, so the time is right.”

The city has budgeted $850,000 for the project, Jones said. Blue Rock Industries of Westbrook is the apparent low bidder, coming in at $769,800. Lewiston’s Pike Industries bid $790,295.

Jones was scheduled to present those bids to the city Finance Committee at 5 p.m. tonight. The meeting will take place in the City Council chambers.

“Then we have to present it to the state Department of Transportation for their blessing,” Jones said. “I suspect we could be ready to go in the next couple of weeks.”

The project calls for removing the pavement surface on the road, rebuilding it and repaving the entire length. The work is scheduled to be complete by Oct. 31.
