DIXFIELD – A benefit dance will be held for Wayne Newton to help fund his fight against a rare cancer beginning at 5 p.m. Thursday, July 31, at Mountain View Campground (Welch’s) on Weld Street. Several different musicians will be playing throughout the evening. There will be food, dancing, 50/50 chance and many raffles. Cost will be $5 for singles and $8 per couple.
Marionette Medley
DIXFIELD – The Ludden Memorial Library will have a performance of Dan Grady’s Marvelous Marionette Medley as a closing to the summer reading program “Laugh it up at your Library” at 1 p.m. Friday, Aug. 1. The show is a fast-paced stringed puppet production, which is sure to captivate, enchant and delight all that attend. The broad range of acts includes tightrope and trapeze artistry by Conway Kitty. This is not to be outdone by Roller Skating Rabbit. In addition to Dan’s performance abilities, he has designed and crafted all the marionettes that are used in this production. Music and songs back every routine. The puppeteer composed all but one song.
Road to close

CARTHAGE – Travel the vibrant streets of London on an intriguing mission to crack the elusive character code as sleuths and inspectors seek to solve “The Great Kingdom Caper” at the Seventh Day Adventist Church, on Route 142, just north of the village. Children ages 3 through 12 are invited to attend the first Vacation Bible school from 10 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Monday, Aug. 4, through Friday, Aug. 8. Lunch will be included. Historic trees
DIXFIELD – The Dixfield Code Enforcement Officer is looking for historic trees that might be nominated to the National Register of Historic Trees. Do you or someone you know in Dixfield have a tree that is a beloved tree of local or legendary significance as well as a state or national treasure? Trees must be located within the boundaries of the town of Dixfield and be of historical significance or of personal family legend. The town is also looking for trees to be measured for the Maine Register of Big Trees. These trees must be measured by circumference, vertical height and average crown spread. Stop by the Town Office for a registration form and measuring instructions or call the Town Office at 562-8151 for more information.
Outdoor Market
DIXFIELD – The Dixfield Main Street Outdoor Market committee is coordinating plans for Market Day that will be held from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 17. This year’s market will have several extra attractions due to it being Dixfield’s Bicentennial. Road races for youths and adults will be held early in the day and are being directed by Paul Jones (562-7172). A flower show will be held at the Historical Society during the day with judging being done the night before. Al Larsen is the contact person for this activity.
An art exhibit/contest will be held at the Ludden Memorial Library and the only requirement is that the art depict some Dixfield scene. Alice McKay Barnett is in charge of this event.
The Arsenault Family Band has agreed to provide music from 9-11 a.m. in the gazebo and Herman LeBlanc, the “Black Mountain Hobo” will also make an appearance. Mary Murphy from Auburn will be offering vocal performances throughout the day behind the Bangor Savings Bank.
There are still vendor spots available and any person or group wanting to sell food, crafts, raffle tickets, flea market items, etc. should contact Ralph or Norine at 562-8816 daytime Tuesday through Saturday.
