BANGOR (AP) – Old Town Canoe Co., which celebrates its 100th anniversary this year, is also approaching another milestone – construction of its millionth boat.

All of the company’s 225 employees will have a hand in the building of the wooden 18-foot Otca canoe, which will be transported to several trade shows around the country.

“In a couple of weeks we’re going to be taking that boat to an outdoor retailer trade show in Salt Lake City and put it on display so some of our customers will be able to help build the boat,” said Bob Scudder, marketing director.

Old Town Canoe makes canoes and kayaks. Determining precisely how many boats Old Town Canoe has produced over the past century is difficult, said Scudder, but records indicate the company has produced close to or slightly more than 1 million boats.

“What we have figured is that nobody else on the planet Earth has made that many boats,” he said. “So it is truly newsworthy. At least in paddle sports, we’ve put more people on the water than any company in history.”
